This October at Surface Gallery, Chameleon explores colour in contemporary art.

Chosen from 250 submissions, the 61 artworks by 33 artists that comprise the exhibition sees a selection of vibrant art in resplendent colour. Chameleon will illuminate the gallery with intensely colourful artworks, while also showing there is much more to colour than hue, saturation and luminosity. Colour shows our feelings, thoughts, and is filled with associations. John McDonald’s Butterfly Cry portrait of Frida Khalo is concerned with the psychological meaning of colour, while Ryan Boultbee’s Taste Like Summer series demonstrates the power of colour in stimulating emotions and memories. Inspiration taken by artists from the surrounding world has allowed us to redefine our use of colour in a constantly changing culture.

Chameleon includes moving-image artworks by three artists. The abstracted videos of Gabriela Halszka Rogula are influenced by 1960’s psychedelia, stimulating the senses with dream-like colour. Sound Artist Daphnellc explores colour’s relationship with sound with a display of pink noise, while Anthony Collier’s innovative and experimental Mindwalks force us to reconsider how we perceive the world.

One exhibitor will be awarded a solo show in Surface Gallery’s main exhibition space.

This exhibition marks twenty years of Surface Gallery. Over the years the gallery has displayed hundreds of exhibitions and supported thousands of artists, helping to develop creative careers for artists and it’s dedicated team of volunteers alike.

Chameleon will occupy the Main Gallery Space. As always, there will be a donations bar with ales from local brewery, Pheasantry.
