About
‘The Good Life’ exhibition by members of Modern Painters, New Decorators features: Natasha Brzezicki, Pamela Clarkson, Tayler Fisher, Tom Fowkes, Harry Freestone, Josh Jones, Atta Kwami, Kate Robotham & David John Scarborough (more to be announced) and is about utopia and townships.
The starting points for this exhibition were two Costa Rican sayings. The phrase ‘Pura Vida’ which means the simple life or pure life and the saying ‘if you have a church, a bar, and a football pitch, then you have a town’, which is a simple metaphor for life, and has also been suggested to be the basic elements of each town or community.
Loughborough’s own Student Triangle echoes this triptych of meeting places, including a church (The St. Peter’s Centre) a bar (The Paget Arms) and a football pitch (Cumberland Park). Alongside the Rosebery Medical Centre, these public spaces have changed and shifted purposes and occupiers over the years as the demographic of the area and community has changed – many of these buildings going through states of disrepair and redundancy alongside the University’s emergence and growth.
Taking these ideas as a starting point for a conversation, this exhibition will attempt to ask some of the following questions;
- What are the constitute parts of a town?
- What does a community need to survive?
- How do we gather and organise ourselves on a local level at a time of global discontent and division?
- What are the raw materials needed for the good life?
- What is utopia? Is it possible?
- Is paradise where we come from, or where we’re going?
- What is the good life?
