About
Drop in to The Arches and speak to a member of the Fermynwoods team for an insight into Edwina FitzPatrick’s The Archive of the Trees project – a sweeping view of weather, memory and climate change.
Edwina was artist in residence at Fineshade Wood from March to September 2018, meeting and speaking with a diverse range of people who care about the wood. Discover how excerpts from these conversations feature in the art works, and how each work focuses on a different tree and human narrative.
These narratives are displayed alongside cores collected from mature trees in Fineshade Wood by Swansea University’s UK Oak Project. Collecting these cores – the tree’s own individual archive – does not harm the tree and reveals the tree’s age, growing patterns, past weather conditions, stresses such as diseases, as well as its individual reaction to diverse and changing weather conditions dating back several decades.
You will be able to watch a short video of the coring process, plus a recording of Edwina’s artist talk about our perceptions of the weather and climate change, with Asher Minns, Director of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research.
