Surface Gallery is excited to announce Unknown Knowns, an exhibition by David Cantrill and Sophie Morton.

Unknown Knowns is a collaboration between Cantrill and Morton, which borrows from Slavoj Zizek’s work on the unknown and engages with themes of the real, human imprints, and ecological accountability. Cantrill’s work explores our sense of place, reproduction and representation. His work questions the integrity of image in its representation of the natural world. Through mark making and other processes, the materiality of the work helps to create a more ephemeral and authentic experience. Information begins to break down from one representation to another, emphasising the veneer and the falsity of the representation. Morton’s work explores human and non-human relationships within our so-called anthropocentric era. Her work interrogates socio-political concerns such as consumerist culture, as well as ecological and environmental matters through the speculative lens of the apocalypse. Together the works create a narrative of human relationships within the natural world, and expose the facades erected to evade responsibility for the consequences of our successes as a species.

Unknown Knowns opens in the Project Space in conjunction with our annual volunteer show, The Exhibitionists, in the Main Gallery. As always, there will be a donations bar with ales from local brewery, Pheasantry.
