The National Gallery is seeking to appoint an Archive Assistant to provide semi-professional support to the Archivist by assisting in the operations of the Research Centre, with a particular focus on the archive collections and records management. The post-holder will help to ensure that the archive collections are well maintained and organised, and will be called upon to assist and invigilate external researchers and respond to enquiries about the archive and the art historical dossiers. The post-holder will also assist the Archivist in the review of records for destruction and help Gallery departments prepare their records for transfer, destruction or digitisation.
You will be educated to degree level and have experience of archives and/or records management work. You will be familiar with archive database systems, and possess excellent IT, writing and research skills. A broad knowledge of the history of Western European painting is desirable.
In this role you will need to be adaptable and to make routine decisions independently without constant supervision. You will also need good organisational and time-management skills, including the ability to prioritise a variety of tasks and meet deadlines; a methodical approach with excellent attention to detail; highly developed interpersonal and communication skills; and the ability to work effectively as part of a team with Research Centre colleagues. The work requires some heavy lifting as well as working at height.
This role is a fixed term contract for up to 12 months to provide maternity cover.
