Artist Residency, National Trust

Next year the National Trust embarks upon an exciting new programme of activity that will see a series of joined-up, research-based programmes of public engagement activity at selected National Trust places and beyond.

This new programme gives us the opportunity to reach out to the nation, beyond our boundaries, and play our part in exploring challenging histories and re-presenting them in new and meaningful ways.

2017 marks the 50th anniversary of the decriminalisation of homosexuality in England. Through our programme ‘Prejudice and Pride’ we will explore places in the Trust that have been shaped by the sexuality of their inhabitants, workers, owners and guests.

We want to support an artist or artist collaboration to develop bold, broad-thinking proposals in response to our LGBTQ national theme for a 6-month ‘agile’ residency and commission.  We are seeking an artist that has a specific interest in LGBTQ history, and who is keen to contribute creatively to sharing our stories. We would like the artist to engage the perspectives and stories of a diverse group of people including our staff, visitors and LGBTQ community.  We hope that an artist (or collaboration) will create some stimulus, inspired by our places, to engage with LGBTQ communities about the significance of LGBTQ heritage.  We anticipate that the outcomes could be an enhanced presence at Pride, a voice for the LGBTQ community into the NT, and content that could be shared online and through property and conference screenings.
