Decorative Arts Assistant Curator

As part of the team delivering the Nottingham Castle re-development project, we are looking for an Assistant Curator to join us and become an expert on the collections of ceramics held at Nottingham Castle and to use that expertise for exhibitions, public programmes and events, online and traditional publishing.

You will work closely with the Curator of Fine & Decorative Arts at Nottingham Castle Museum & Art Gallery supporting the development and delivery of new story-led galleries and displays in Nottingham Castle.  You will be working on a £29 million transformational project, developing innovative new galleries and displays using the Castle’s extensive collections and developing a narrative approach to the display of the ceramics collections.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of two years’ experience in a similar role.

 Contract & Conditions

This will be a fixed term 3 year contract beginning in 2017 and terminating in 2020. The successful candidate will be expected to work an average of 30 hours per week. This role may include occasional evening and weekend working for which no additional payment will be made

Duties 

  • Support the development and delivery of new story-led galleries and displays
  • Become expert on the ceramics collections and demonstrate that expertise in exhibitions, public programmes and events, online and traditional publishing
  • Support the Curator of Fine & Decorative Arts in the development and display of the ceramics collections for the benefit of the public
  • Develop innovative narrative interpretation to make the collections accessible and relevant to visitors
  • Liaise with consultants, contractors and external organisations as required in relation to the ceramics and stoneware collections, exhibitions and publications
  • Supervise students and volunteers working on projects connected with ceramics collections

Person Specification

Essential

  • Demonstrable experience of working with 3D collections in a museum/gallery environment
  • Demonstrable experience of interpretation for a wide variety of audiences in museums and online
  • Demonstrable experience of visitor focused museum exhibitions and/or other public outputs
  • Experience of working with ceramics collections or equivalent relevant collections
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • High level of attention to detail and organisational skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Flexible approach to work
  • Able to work well within a team and a proven ability to communicate well with visitors, peers and other staff
  • Enthusiastic, honest, highly self-motivated and able to remain calm under pressure

Desirable

  • Experience of exhibition development and delivery
  • Experience of working with designers
  • Experience of developing story-led content for non-experts

We are looking for an excellent communicator, who can liaise with a variety of internal and external stakeholders to achieve successful outcomes. With strong organisational skills, you will be able to meet set deadlines and targets whilst maintaining a keen attention to detail.
