Draw the Line: Call for Submissions

At Surface Gallery this spring, artists are invited to explore ‘how do we define drawing today?’

One of the building blocks of art, drawing is at the core of artistic practice. Often overlooked as a means to an end, drawing has been having a resurgence in recent years, emerging as a vibrant area of research in contemporary art.

Paul Klee famously described drawing as ‘taking a line for a walk’. Draw the Line looks at the many different paths these lines explore. All submissions will be considered. Any theme, genre and approach is welcome. Alongside artworks on paper and canvas, drawings that examine different methods of presentation are encouraged. As part of the exhibition, there will be a projection of animated drawings, which artists can apply to exhibit in. We are looking for innovative and critically informed work, as well as technical skill. The show will be held in Surface Gallery’s main exhibition space.

Prize:

One exhibitor will be awarded a show in Surface Gallery’s main exhibition space. This will be an opportunity for the selected artist to showcase new work in a contemporary art gallery. A selection panel will choose the winner of the prize.

Deadline for submissions: 5pm Friday 24th March 2017.

Application packs can be downloaded from surfacegallery.org/opportunities or paper copies can be picked up from the gallery during opening hours.

Each artist can submit one drawing for £10, three for £15 and six for £25. Artists can submit to exhibit in the moving-image projection for £5 per artwork.

Successful artists for this juried open will be notified by Monday 27th March 2017.

Exhibition Dates: 8th April – 22nd April 2017.
