Wolverhampton Art Gallery seeks to commission an artist to devise and deliver two arts workshops for families inspired by the gallery’s Black Art collection, particularly a new acquisition, Earth by Yinka Shonibare, currently on display.
They should celebrate Black History Month, when the Gallery will focus on the role Wolverhampton Art Gallery played in the formation of the ground-breaking BLK Art Group and the subsequent Black Art movement throughout the 1980s and its global legacy today.
Workshop 1: Tuesday 30 October – Afro-Punk Textile Art
11am – 12.30pm
Ages 4-12 years – up to 20 places
This workshop should be planned and structured to fully occupy 90mins of activity for a broad age-range as specified. It should be a high-quality, enjoyable and imaginative offer where children can be inspired, learn new skills, and take away a unique textile creation shaped directly by the art gallery’s most recent acquisition, Earth by Yinka Shonibare.
Workshop 2:
Friday 2 November – Play with Clay: Afro-Punk Portraits
11am – 1pm
All ages, drop-in
This creative clay session should be a high-quality, engaging, flexible activity suitable for families dropping-in between 11am-1pm. The activity should be inspired directly by Yinka Shonibare’s Earth. Reference should also be made to the appropriate portrait paintings in the National Portrait Gallery’s BP Portrait Award exhibition on show at Wolverhampton Art Gallery from 13 October 2018. Children and their parents and carers should be able to take away their own unique clay portrait on the same day.
