Head of Legal

n exciting opportunity has arisen for a Head of Legal to lead the in-house legal team at the National Gallery.

Reporting to the Director of the National Gallery, the Head of Legal will lead on the provision of high quality legal, compliance and commercial advice to the Director, Board and teams across the Gallery, and will be responsible for ensuring that the Gallery operates legally within its many regulatory and legislative frameworks. The Head of Legal will also act as the Gallery’s Data Protection Officer.

The Gallery’s legal team, acting with the support of its external advisers when required, deals with drafting and negotiation of a wide range of commercial contracts; manages the legal aspects of picture acquisitions; ensures the availability of a wide range of standard template documentation to teams within the Gallery; provides advice on the regulatory framework affecting the Gallery as a non-Departmental public body and exempt charity; advises on and defends or pursues contentious matters; and advices on property and construction law matters.

The successful candidate will be a qualified Solicitor or Barrister with a minimum of 5 years post qualification experience in a relevant field; will have a demonstrable track record of delivering high quality commercial risk based legal advice; the ability to advise on a wide range of legal and compliance issues affecting the Gallery; excellent organisational skills and the ability to balance conflicting demands; the ability to lead, manage and support the Gallery’s legal team; and the ability to manage the Gallery’s external legal team and legal fees budget.
