Registrar and Collections Manager

Leeds Museums and Galleries (LMG) seeks to appoint a Registrar and Collections Manager to provide collections management and registration leadership, advice and support across the Service.

LMG is the largest local authority museum service in the country and an Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisation. We hold one of the most important encyclopaedic collections in the UK with an estimated 1.3 million objects, which include our historic buildings. Our collections derive from locations across the world, across cultures and time – spanning some 5 billion years of Earth history and 300,000 years of human civilisation. We have an active loans programme nationally and internationally; during 2017/18 LMG loaned 227 objects to 11 venues in 7 countries. Our exhibitions programme across multiple sites also brings a high volume of loans in, both from artists, collectors and other museums.

Operating across LMG’s nine museums, this is a pivotal role ensuring policy and procedure are implemented and the Service meets its legal and ethical requirements. Reporting to the Head of Collections and Programmes, the postholder line manages a number of posts within the wider team and is the key contact for the team in relation collections management queries and training. The post holds the relationship with the provider of our collections management database. The postholder manages exhibition logistics across our sites in liaison with colleagues.

We are looking for an experienced Registrar and Collections Manager who can manage competing priorities and brings excellent interpersonal and communication skills. You will be educated to degree level or hold a professional vocational qualification within a relevant subject/area eg Museum Studies, Art Law.

We promote diversity and want a workforce that reflects the population of Leeds.
