Re-Meet the Artist: Serena Smith

The last three years since my first ‘Meet The Artist’ interview have been fairly busy, both in the studio, and in work supporting and collaborating with other artists.

Recent exhibitions include ‘A Study in Stone’ at the Tarpey Gallery – a group show with the four artists who I’ve mentored over the past six years as Lithography Fellows at Leicester Print Workshop. I was also delighted in 2017 to be included in the Ruskin Prize shortlist exhibition in Sheffield; the Rabley Drawing Centre touring exhibition of artists’ sketchbooks; and the inaugural exhibition at The Old Lock Up Gallery, in Matlock. Globally work has been included in international printmaking exhibitions in Portugal, Poland and China; and in 2016 I was delighted to take up the offer of an artist’s residency in China. Closer to home, it was wonderful to participate recently as a project artist working with refugees and asylum seekers in ‘Journey’s Festival International’.

Back in the studio, work in progress focusses on drawing practice. As part of a visual and textual enquiry into the embodied acts of inscription, an ongoing project provisionally entitled ‘Caudex’, is fuelled by a fascination with medieval drawings and manuscripts.
