Remote Roundup 21st – 27th September 2020

Small Worlds’ – Lois Wallace. Opens 26 Sep
Lois won the solo show prize back in 2019 in the gallery’s annual Open. The exhibition promises to be another great one. Small worldsare paintings in a space between worlds, reality and memory. They depict fragile temporary structures and fires, on the edge and out of place. There is a stillness and tension that is foreboding and unsettling. An ambiguous early morning light marks a point of change for another uncertain day. Golden  twilight evokes presence and absence, the epic and the intimate. The paintings are made using transparent oil paint on copper. The warmth of the copper ground glows through the layers of paint to create light, atmosphere and a sense of illumination from within. These quiet narratives are recognisable and familiar but also unsettling, mysterious and closed, much like our current times.
