These free and open talks take place in the community and provide an opportunity for discussion on subjects of common experience. In previous years we have hosted talks on “Art + Dyslexia” and “Art + Autism”. This time we have broadened the topic to additionally include subjects such as ADHD, Asperger’s Syndrome, Dyspraxia, and neurodiversity in general (the position that neurological differences like autism should be viewed as natural genetic varitations and not as illnesses).

David Walton is a Senior Counselling Psychologist who has been working in the National Health Service for over 16 years. He graduated with a Single Honours Degree in Psychology in 2000 and worked in North East London, in Essex for eight years where he obtained his professional qualifications in Counselling Psychology through London Metropolitan University.
David has worked across various different clinical fields including chronic Mental Health Conditions, Older Adults, and Developmental Conditions such as Autism Spectrum Conditions and ADHD. David has been working in a very busy NHS service for the last five years that specialises in the assessment and treatment of developmental conditions (namely ADHD, Asperger’s and Tourette’s Syndrome). He diagnoses approximately 100 clients per year as well as offering follow-up treatment, supervision, training, therapy and general support for these populations and related professionals.

Susan Kruse was diagnosed autistic in 2011. Her art practice includes sculpture, video and drawing and is intrinsically connected to her divergent neurology. She is currently a recipient of the Cultivate mentoring programme from DASH Arts, a disability-led visual arts organisation and works part-time as Gallery Supervisor at BOM (Birmingham Open Media) and is helping to develop their space and programme to support autistic artists and visitors.
Susan Kruse graduated with a first class honours degree from York St Johns in Fine Art in 2005 and since then has gone on to make and exhibit work both in the UK and abroad; including Deviant Art Festival (DAFT) in Trollhatten, Sweden, the Swansea Fringe, Hida Takayama Museum of Art, Japan, Shape Arts Pop-up, London, and various artists’ book festivals.
In 2013 Kruse was the founder and curator of The Library of Lost Books, a project in which discarded or unwanted books were salvaged and distributed to forty-eight artists. These books were modified or re-made as art objects and exhibited at Library of Birmingham and around the UK. The collection is now housed at the University of Wolverhampton
