About
In Plain Site focuses on Rufford Colliery Complex and Clipstone Forest, local to Sherwood Pines. In 1929, schoolchildren visiting the Peak District described Stanage Edge as “An indescribable heap of filthy paper, empty fruit tins, broken bottles, cigarette and chocolate wrappers, matchboxes, cigarette ends and other litter.” (Campaign for National Parks, 2021). Ninety years later, the Peak District National Park published spending figures of £37,000 yearly on litter picking to remove around 50 tonnes of general waste and 10 tonnes of recyclable waste from Peak District car parks which affects the environment, its people and its wildlife, not including all the litter removed voluntarily by residents.
Her fascination with illusion and optical viewers inspired her to view litter through a teleidoscope, fragmenting litter to reveal its different aspects. A floating triangle hovers over a regenerated, post-industrial landscape, reflecting waste found at the scene. She challenges people to consider whether her photographs and discourse can act as a catalyst to begin to change societal behaviour.
Family-friendly activities include storytelling, quizzes, poster-making and debating. These activities complement the exhibition. Guided by a teacher from Samuel Barlow Academy Primary School and a Law graduate from the University of Huddersfield, visitors can use the photographs as inspiration to examine the significance of consumerism and choice relating to environmental concerns.
