About
This is an open session for anyone curious about p5.js and its role in creative coding, where we’ll explore how artists and designers have used it to challenge the limits of code as a medium for expression.
By engaging with technology in innovative and unexpected ways, we will explore how coding can be more than technical—it’s also a cultural practice that reflects and reshapes social structures.
Through our discussions, we’ll explore how p5.js opens up new possibilities for creative work while addressing the deeper cultural and political implications of code, as discussed in the book Aesthetic Programming. https://aesthetic-programming.net/
Aesthetic Programming: A Handbook of Software Studies by Winnie Soon and Geoff Cox is a book that explores the intersection of programming and aesthetics, combining critical theory, software studies, and artistic practice. This book reflects on the cultural, social, and political implications of programming, offering a unique approach to understanding code beyond its technical dimensions.
Aesthetic Programming reflects a movement toward understanding code as a form of creative expression, with implications for how we think about the design and structure of software systems in the broader cultural and political landscape. It’s an essential read for those interested in the philosophy of technology and the role of programming in shaping the human experience.
During the session we will pick 1 or 2 activities to do from the book and tackle it together (consulting Chat GPT along the way).
This meet up is for anyone who is interested in these topics; you don’t need to be adept at coding/programming.
This meet up is part of LCB Depot’s 20th anniversary celebrations and is followed by a drinks mixer from 7pm.
