About the exhibition

This extraordinary series of photographic art-works by the distinguished artist Tim Head was produced more than four decades ago, in 1982. This is the first time these works have been exhibited in a solo show in the UK.

Aesthetically, the art-works reveal a profound tension between the abstract and the representational.

Although they were made more than four decades ago, these sinister and unsettling works seem to speak directly to the present. The artist’s concerns about surveillance and security, power and control, conveyed through composite two-part or four-part photographic images, are as relevant today as when they were produced.

Tim Head’s austere, alienated images of empty urban spaces challenge our notion that photography is an objective means of reproducing reality and make the world unfamiliar to us.

A fully-illustrated catalogue by the curator, Professor Phillip Lindley, will be available.
