Director of Programmes

Are you inquisitive, thoughtful, passionate, and committed to using cultural heritage to make people’s lives better? Do you want to work in one of the UK’s most pioneering civic museums?

The Role

Derby Museums is recruiting a Director of Programmes to lead its teams working in learning, display and interpretation and curatorship. We’re looking for a candidate who is experienced, confident, creative, collaborative and willing to try new things.

You will build on the success of the critically acclaimed £18m Museum of Making at Derby Silk Mill and deliver an inspiring programme across our three museum sites, in the community and online. You will connect with communities, encouraging people to view museums as part of their daily lives. You’ll shape programmes which will bring joy but will also encourage audiences to look at the world differently. You’ll form mutual relationships with educators, artists, industry, and community partners.

You’ll co-ordinate and advance relationships with local, national, and international partners and stakeholders. You’ll lead the public programme elements as we initiate ambitious plans to re-develop Derby Museum and Art Gallery – the home of Joseph Wright of Derby.

The Person

We’re looking for a leader with proven experience in spearheading programming teams. You’ll be organised, creative and thoughtful and willing to be challenged by our community. Above all else, you’ll have a strong commitment to the cultural heritage of Derby and a strong belief in your ability to make a positive impact.

We believe that diversity and equality within our workplace, programmes and in our outlook is crucial. We therefore particularly welcome applications from candidates that are under-represented at Derby Museums and within the heritage sector, including black and minority ethnic candidates and/or candidates with a disability.

The Place

Derby Museums is for the thinker and maker in all of us. It is a charitable trust which runs three museums and cares for collections of cultural heritage on behalf of Derby City Council. This includes the finest collection of work by the 18th century British artist Joseph Wright of Derby and extensive collections natural science, world cultures, archaeology, history and making.

Derby is a city with a heart, in the heart of England. It’s a friendly, prosperous but affordable place on the edge of the beautiful Peak District and has great ambitions to place culture at the heart of its future prosperity.
