Panellist:

Steve Randall

I consider myself a naive and intuitive painter. Initially I concentrated on creating tight illustrations of childhood events and memories which looked to document those moments and relationships that forged a community. I take an impressionistic approach to illustration that is evocative and emotional. This is especially true when I focus on difficult subjects such as family members’ mental health, my mothers battle with mania and depression as well as the unexplained death of my younger brother when he was only 19. This culminated in my book the Kirkby Chronicles and my first solo exhibition in 2021. Three of the thirty two piece Kirkby collection then went on to adorn the walls of Liverpool’s Walker Gallery as part of the Art of the Terraces exhibition in 2022/23. We had over 52,000 visitors which is still hard for me to process. To see a wider audience connect with the work and realising its universal appeal has allowed me to explore new and potentially unexpected styles and subject matter.
