Steffie Richards is based in Derbyshire. Her work relates to fleeting glimpses of personal experience – moments sometimes unexplainable, but which we identify with; ones which “make us unique in the way we are”. “In taking the viewpoint that if we left behind us, a trace of our passing through a space, then this is how she, the artist visualises that space might be. It is the invisible but physical clutter that she imagines is left behind within these moments, when what we experience becomes a deeply personal and memorable event, embedded in our psyche, but oddly which we can no longer prove existential.
Describe your practice for us:
I am a Fine Artist with oil painting as my primary practice. I an interested in capturing fleeting moments of experience where I have experience wonder, awe or simply been amazed by something which normally goes unnoticed like the high that a runner feels, or being submerged in the ocean or simply watching the tides ebb and flow. My secondary practice is Paper Sculpture – and finding a way to speak about current issues through it.

What is the most interesting/inspiring thing you have seen/been to over the last month, and why?
The most inspiring thing for me is standing by the ocean, watching the tides and the
changing aspects of the beach, realising that the sands never remain the same day in day out, relates to unexplainable elements and the fact that its beauty is ever changing and will never again be the same experience.
Which other artists’ work do you admire, and why?
I admire the work of East Midlands Artist Jackie Berridge – she brings out such deep emotive and profound experience of childhood through her work, makes a statement about things set deep in the psych of children which is almost as intangible as the speechlessness rendered by knowing danger and bearing it.
