Above the Law (Girls in Boots): The Castle Prize Exhibition by Zoe Spowage
30th September – 14th October
Opening Night: Friday 29th September, 6-9pm

Surface Gallery is delighted to announce a solo exhibition by Zoe Spowage. Above the Law (Girls in Boots) is the culmination of a four-week residency awarded to Spowage for the Nottingham Castle Open 2016.

Above the Law (Girls in Boots) is a celebration of drawing, loved up with colour. Zoe Spowage creates large tableaus/comic book strips of women in full swing using paint and pastel. Haircuts, skidding shoes and church hats, the exhibition displays bold imagery and wooden cutout sculptural pieces. “With sensual curves and pointy prehensiles”, as Young Artists in Conversation observed, “there is no mistaking Zoe’s transformative style, which morphs between painting and scenery. Her colour palette shifts to daring combinations, as does the subject of the imagery”. Above the Law (Girls in Boots) is the newest work from one of the brightest and boldest talents around. Dust off your frocks and strap on your boots and head into town: not to be missed.

The Opening Night features live music from songstress Rita Pettai “about everything that is love”, and a performance of rhythmic poetry and new writings from William Spowage. Above the Law (Girls in Boots) opens in the Main Gallery. As always, there will be a donations bar with ales from local brewery, Springhead.

Free Entry: Everyone Welcome
Workshop:
Saturday 7th October, 11am to 5pm

Zoe will be holding a mixed-media monoprinting workshop. Participants will either draw from the work on show in Zoe’s exhibition or from imagination, and then turn their drawings into small prints to take home. The workshop is open to all ages and abilities: no previous experience in printmaking is needed. The workshop will also offer an informal opportunity to talk to the artist about her work. Feel free to drop in anytime throughout the day.

Cost: £3 per person. Materials and refreshments provided
