Elpida Hadzi-Vasileva is an artist who works in sculpture, video, sound, photography and installation. Her materials range from the highly unusual to the mundane including organic materials, foodstuffs and gold leaf.

In 2016, she created a new body of work for the Djanogly Gallery inspired by medical research into digestive diseases undertaken at the University. The exhibition Making Beauty also included her first UK showing of a major artwork commissioned by the Vatican for the Venice Biennale in 2015, and a large-scale installation exploring near-death experience. Elpida returned to Lakeside in 2018 and 2019 to complete a commission for Highfields Park. The sculpture Eurydice Prevails consists of two inverted Elm trees decorated in gold leaf, the patterns of which reveal the tracks left by the Elm bark beetle: the cause of their destruction.]

Neil Walker, Head of Visual Arts Programming, hosts this interview with artist Elpida Hadzi-Vasileva. The conversation will touch on her choice of highly unusual art materials, her interest in medical science and her revelation of beauty in the most unlikely places.
