Artist in Residence Call Out

Between 11 Aug – 27 Oct 2018 we will be exhibiting etchings by Suzanne Balkanyi (1922 – 2005) from the 1950s and 1960s from her time in Paris, and we are now looking for an Artist in Residence to create new work in response to her work.

After graduating from the Beaux Art in 1948, Suzanne Balkanyi worked as an illustrator in the Menagerie du Jardin des Plantes (the Paris Zoo). The exhibition, No-one Will Know How Happy I’ve Been, will include work from two main areas of study; closely observed studies of many of the animals in the Paris Zoo; and etchings of personal observations of everyday life in Paris.

This exhibition will be the first posthumous show of her work in the UK and we are looking for an Artist in Residence for 3 months (April-June) to create new work in response to the work that will be exhibited during the exhibition (August – October).

LPW has been gifted over 150 of her original copper plates (for research and study purposes) some of which will also be on display during the exhibition, and will be available to the Artist in Residence. These idiosyncratic etchings were originally mainly reproduced in black and white, emphasising Balkanyi’s use of line in her illustrations.
