Assistant Curator (Public Programme)

Primary is an artist-led space in Nottingham that supports creative research through artist studios and residencies, public exhibitions and events. Having joined the Arts Council England National Portfolio in 2018, and expanded our programme and support for artists, we now seek to appoint an Assistant Curator to make an important contribution to our work, expanding the depth of programme and our learning as an organisation. This role would suit someone with a desire to develop their skills and experience in the visual arts, and a genuine interest in working within an organisation focused on supporting artistic research and production. During this next stage of development we aim to expand our thinking around research and production, and apply a form of ‘collective learning’ to Primary – working together with users of the organisation (staff, artists, participants and audiences) to critically reflect on our practices, and inform what we do in the future.

The Assistant Curator will be a key role in a small staff team alongside the Director, Engagement Curator, Artist Development Coordinator, and Office Manager. This role will support the delivery of the public programme, assisting with curatorial research, planning, the production of exhibitions and events, audience development and evaluation. We are looking for someone with the strong administrative skills necessary for this role, and also the passion and commitment to contribute to the shared vision for Primary. The successful person will be a confident communicator, with the ability to work under pressure and operate flexibly as part of the team.

This is an exciting moment to join the organisation as it moves into a new phase of development. Primary were recently awarded a Paul Hamlyn Foundation grant to explore a cycle of theory, practice, and reflection that will be extended across all of our activity. Through this work, the Assistant Curator will be actively involved in shaping the programme, with the opportunity to take greater responsibility as the role develops.
