Call for Physical and Digital Performers

About LEVEL and the SENSE Project

LEVEL is a contemporary art organisation creating, promoting and celebrating the art that difference makes. Our home at the award winning Level Centre provides gallery, research and event spaces set in rural Derbyshire.

The SENSE Project a multi media, multi model performance work created specifically for people with a learning disability and complex needs. It uses live sound, interactive video, costume, movement, smell, taste and physical theatre to provide powerful and engaging experiences for people who are not able to access mainstream culture or cultural venues.

It is a large-impact production using a small set of resources and is accessible to new audiences across a wide age range: from 12 – 70yrs.

SENSE will tour to 20 venues across North Derbyshire over the next twelve months.

Each performance lasts for about 45 minutes and is designed to explore our (human) senses through physical theatre, sound, vision, smell, touch and taste. It does not follow a narrative and makes absolutely no sense as a story. This is deliberate, as we want to provide an environment where audience members have the opportunity to use sensory stimulation to form their own personal connections and meanings. These could range from memories and emotions to, perhaps, exploring connections between people, objects and sensory stimulation.

SENSE is performed by four people, two on-stage physical performers, and two digital performers creating live sound and images off-stage. Each performer has a specific character and therefore a different way of relating to the audience. As a sensory performance you can expect loud sounds, strong colours, powerful smells, taste and touch. It has been created for people with profound multiple disabilities and we recognise that our audience may experience the world very differently from many people. This is why we have chosen to experiment with the structure and form of the performance and wish to enable the sensory stimulation to speak for itself.

LEVEL is seeking performers for the SENSE project to join our team to develop and tour this work. We are looking for Physical Performers and Digital Performers (performers can also be a mix of both).

Digital Performers
You will need experience of using live video playback systems together with live video mapping, live sound and some audio processing. We are not seeking musicians necessarily, but the ability to play sound and creatively use instruments is important.
