Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art

Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art: Department of Western Art

Salary Grade 8: £39,324 – £46,924 p.a.
Full time
Fixed Term for 5 years

Based at the Ashmolean Museum and reporting directly to the Keeper of the Department of Western Art the Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art will have curatorial responsibility for the care and development of the Museum’s post-1945 Western Art collections. S/he will develop programmes and exhibitions of Modern and Contemporary Art in all areas represented by the Museum’s collections in liaison with other colleagues and with the Director. S/he will also be involved in research, publication and teaching.

The Ashmolean’s late 20th-century Western Art collections include important paintings and sculpture, a representative selection of works on paper by major British post-war artists, and a significant group of German Neo-Expressionist prints, but have little of the depth of the collections of earlier periods. By contrast the Museum’s Eastern Art holdings include the most important repository of 20th-century Chinese ink-painting outside China.

To be successful in this role you will have a relevant post graduate degree or equivalent knowledge or experience in Modern and Contemporary art, together with a wide knowledge of this subject area. You will have a record of publication in this area and the capacity to produce research of international standing; have experience of working with contemporary artists on commissions and exhibitions and have direct, hands-on experience of Modern and Contemporary works of art.

You will make an application online, to be submitted before noon on Monday 30 January. As part of your application, you will be expected to upload two references supporting previous work or activity that relates to this role. You will also be asked to upload a CV and a supporting statement which should be no longer that 1500 words. The supporting statement should explain how you meet the selection criteria for the post using examples of your skills and experience. This may include experience gained in employment, education, or during career breaks (such as time out to care for dependants).
