QUAD is seeking to commission one artist/ artist group/ designer to collaborate with QUAD curators and digital artists to develop and design a physical ‘set’ that will be built and situated in QUAD Gallery.
This exhibition is intended to be a curated game-like journey in which the gallery visitor explores the ‘set’ installation in the gallery space, looking for six fragments of a ‘lost’ MacGuffin. The fragments exist as ‘Augmented Reality’ (AR) – visible only through the screen of a handheld tablet computer.
The Theme
We invite you to submit a proposal that responds aesthetically and materially to the theme of a corruption, glitch or fissure in the everyday/ the world around us – glitches that can encompass a wide range of subjects including technology; the cinematic; time travel; computer games; history, and real/digital landscape. Each AR piece – real and decoy – will also exhibit glitches (but we are not asking you to design the MacGuffin’s, but your proposal will inform their design); and these glitches will be mirrored in the set on flat screens, or projected large-scale within the set, or physically built within the set.
We are especially seeking proposals that display a united concept, structure and aesthetic so that the visitor will feel immersed in the space. We would like the commissioned artist to consider the relationship and physical/virtual dynamic between the glitch space of the gallery and moments of lucid clarity or further abstraction which can be provided through the AR imagery.
Fee: £1000 plus fabrication costs.
