This new work by Banks Mill affiliate member Dom Elger is a new major series of mixed media works exploring the contrast between life in a pastoralist society in Southern Ethiopia and the lifestyle of Western Europe. The collection will include a series of drawings made in Ethiopia and accompanying photographs and promises to tell a dramatic story.
The exhibition will include five large scale artworks which will be over one and a half meters tall along with photographs depicting life in the village compound. To set the atmosphere music and tribal singing will be played in the background.
Dom comments: “Last year I had an exhibition at Banks Mill called Conflict of Head and Heart which explored the turmoil I experienced when living a life split between Derby and tribal Africa. This first exhibition was mainly about me trying to establish my own identity. This new show continues that exploration in how I feel, sometimes alienated, sometimes frightened, sometimes loved or sometimes an outsider looking in”.
The exhibition opens to the public on Monday 4 July running until Friday 29 July.
You can join Dom at his launch evening on Monday, 4 July from 5-7pm – everyone is welcome and no booking is required.
