This is an exciting period of renewal for NGS, as we move forward with a recently developed strategic vision that puts our audience at the heart of what we do. We’re making it our mission to broaden our impact, matching our rich collections, expertise and creativity to the needs and wants of our visitors. We’re finding new ways to connect with more people, and developing an innovative, inclusive organisation that can meet the needs and expectations of diverse audiences in the 21st century. ‘Art for Scotland: Inspiration for the world’ is Our Vision. We want to be Scotland’s powerhouse for art. Inclusive, original and ambitious – we will make the national collection accessible to all and inspire curiosity across the world.

The Role

Following the appointment of Professor Chris Breward as Director, National Museums Scotland, we are seeking to appoint his successor as Director of Collection and Research, a role fundamental to fulfilling our ambition. Reporting to the Director General, this senior role will play a key part in lifting the profile of the organisation’s curatorial and research activity. The Director will be a champion for the NGS collection and have responsibility for all aspects of curatorial activity, including acquisitions, exhibitions and research ensuring that these contribute to the overall aims and strategy of NGS. He/she will play a key part in implementing change and be expected to collaborate across all areas of collection-related expertise and maximise opportunities to extend knowledge and research across NGS and with external partners.

The new Director will be a skilled and resilient leader with ability to inspire and motivate teams, encouraging collaboration across NGS and connecting our collection with the research needs and interests of our audiences. They will have notable experience of supporting positive organisational and cultural change at senior level in art, museum or similar heritage organisation.
