With generous support from the Heritage Lottery Fund, CASE has been collecting stories, photos, and objects, from people who have worked in, or lived with co-operatives of all types in Leicestershire. Co-operatives have a rich and storied history; this project will celebrate that by telling the stories of their members and communities. Since its founding, the cooperative movement has flourished, extending across the globe and encompassing all sectors of economy. From credit unions to shoe-makers, co-operatives draw their strength from the same principles.
The project includes documentation from organisations such as Equity Shoes and the Ratae Co-operative Players, showcasing the impact co-operatives have had on both our industries and cultural life. Overall, the exhibition will feature over 1000 stories, 2000 photos, 150 objects, video interviews, documentation of key co-operative locations and more.
Co-operatives are based on the values of self-help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, equity and solidarity. These principles are held in the tradition of their founders, co-operative members believe in the ethical values of honesty, openness, social responsibility and caring for others. In a time of great societal change, this is a moment to reflect on how we can collaborate, support each other and structure our businesses. By recording co-operative histories, we can learn how we can move forwards.
