About

For this panel discussion we have invited guest speakers with knowledge in the arts, activism, academia, culture and speaking from personal experience to share their insights of Black British masculinities in the 21st century.

The discussion seeks to problematise the notion of a fixed masculine identity, particularly in the present time and as exhibited in NAE’s show Cut & Mix – which depicts the range, breadth and depths of how Black British masculinities are embodied and performed. It will problematise the perceived homogeneity of Blackness, masculinity, and Britishness as essentialised identities. It will also ask the questions: is masculinity really in crisis? And if so, what does this mean for Black British masculinity due to historical and contemporary marginalisation? How useful are Black feminist and Black queer theory in untangling historical heteronormative and heteropatriarchal discourses on masculinities? What does the future look like for Black British masculinity in the era of BLM, George Floyd, COVID-19 and as we enter Brexit?

Join us for this conversation chaired by Ian Sergeant, on how artists, activists, and academics bring together to explore wider ideas that exist within the exhibition Cut & Mix.

Panellists include: Gaylene Gould, Beverley Bennett, Amartey Golding, and All Black Connect members Chantelle Fagan-Clarke and James Denham.

This event is online and will be streamed on NAE’s YouTube channel. Booking is required so we can send you the streaming link.

This event will be British Sign Language interpreted.
