About

From Ear to Ear to Eye is about listening and translation. The exhibition is concerned with how sounds can provide evidence or testimony, and the ways in which histories and experiences are intertwined with music.
Borrowing its title from a poem by the Egyptian artist Anna Boghiguian, From Ear to Ear to Eye explores the acoustic lives of different cities and places across the Arab world. The exhibition considers the different ways in which notation and recording are used to map memories and migration, territories and conflict. It is about sounds travelling across borders, or being used to define them. It is about that which might be voiced or heard, but resists being visualised.
From Ear to Ear to Eye brings together installations, sculptures, films, photographs, sound works, performances and archives by 17 artists of different generations, many of whom are based in the Arab world. New and recent works include graphic scores, musical instruments, field recordings, poems and records.
Participating artists include: Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Etel Adnan, Haig Aivazian, Mounira Al Sohl, Basma Alsharif, Ziad Antar, Marwa Arsanios, Ania Dabrowska, Malak Helmy, Joana Hadjithomas & Khalil Joreige, Hiwa K, Jumana Manna, Joe Namy, Setareh Shahbazi, Raed Yassin and Shirin Yousefi.
Supported by the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture – AFAC.
