Tom Pitt’s paintings focus on specific locations and everyday objects, often depicting a local landmark or observation. Common motifs can be easily identified: boats, roofs, eyes, hands and stripes reference the environment or objects which surround him and also pay homage to painting heroes – from Giotto to Guston. Always on wood, mostly repurposed from old kitchen cabinet doors or scraps of shelving – his painting often incorporates an integral frame within the composition, and might feature a paper box or scraps of insulating tube, which could be read equally as architectural feature or minimal form.

Pitt often works on 20 plus paintings at a time, and works are often revisited or materials re-purposed in some way. Many works are sanded back and reveal handwriting or text, which occasionally refer to identifiable shapes within the arrangement. Most of the time, references are personal and hint at some hidden narrative. The colour palette used often seems close to the reality of the land itself; what might seem at first to be the military greys and greens of an Airfix model kit or the dregs of leftover tins from the shed, accurately depicts the landscape of Aberthaw, a 16th Century port now more famous for its power station located within five miles of the artists’ home.

Growing up in Barry, South Wales, Pitt studied Sculpture at Cardiff University, graduating in 2003. Having lived and worked in Nottingham for a time, he has returned to Wales and regularly collaborates and exhibits with LLE gallery in Cardiff. This is his first exhibition with Syson Gallery. Selected exhibitions and prizes include John Moores Painting Prize, 2012; National Eisteddfod of Wales 2012; Creekside Open 2013; National Eisteddfod of Wales 2014; Beep Painting Prize 2014 (Highly Commended); Exeter Open 2015 (Winner); Oriel Davies Open 2016; National Eisteddfod of Wales 2016.
