Otherlings is an exhibition featuring work from Ang Bartram, Steve Baker, Huw Davies and Phil Basi, Paula McCloskey and Sam Vardy, Stephanie Rushton and Mally Mallinson, Craig Fisher and Christine Parker. The overarching theme of the artworks within the exhibition suggests something beyond the parameters of dominancy and its cultural representation. The work in many ways offers explicit or implicit ways to connect us to other perspectives, and experiences through different and often unseen and discussed encounters. It thus opens up new paradigms for debate, for how we might live with care and compassion and function with others, as part of a world shared by many.
A selection of the artists will be in conversation to discuss the themes and research that underpins their work, their means of production and the crossovers and synergies that appear within the exhibition.
Steve Baker’s talk following the roundtable discussion will discuss the development of his art practice over the past decade. It will consider his work in the context of his writings on contemporary art, which have focused on artists who engage seriously with questions of animal life. The talk will touch on recent discussions of contemporaneity and of ethically-engaged representation, and he will conclude by outlining his role in the early stages of a collaborative art project on white storks in contemporary urban environments. Baker is Professor of Research for Art and Media at the University of Derby, and is part of the new animal research group within the University’s Digital and Material Artistic Research Centre.
