About

A Creative Gathering is the continuation of a collaborative project created with co-researchers from Nottingham and led by artist Barby Asante with sorryyoufeeluncomfortable (SYFU) collective, as part of NAE’s current exhibition UNTITLED. Exploring the work of the exhibiting artists, this project combines dialogue, performance and film to consider contemporary art practice; the usefulness of terms like ‘Black Art’: and the social, political and cultural conditions that inform the work of young artists of colour.

A Creative Gathering includes a screening of These Walls by Ewuraba Hama Lansiquot; a film using footage from the archive of 198 Contemporary Arts & Learning, a gallery in Brixton supporting contemporary artists from diverse cultural backgrounds. It asks: how can we ensure spaces for marginalised peoples are maintained? Following the screening will be performances from SYFU members Grace, Raisa and Genius.

Part of the event will be dedicated to discussing art production and young people today, as part of a conversation chaired by Barby Asante, joined by SYFU members, and others arts professionals. It considers issues such as the role of art school, how artists work with institutions, and the politics of space. This unique event provides an opportunity to engage with a range of issues affecting the future of art production, and provides networking opportunities for arts professionals.
