About

Opening Night: Friday 3rd November, 6-9pm

Surface Gallery invites you to discover Perfume as Practice, an exhibition that celebrates and explores the possibilities of scent in art.

Perfume as Practice houses no less than 20 bespoke and diverse perfumes, each a portrait of an artist. In his ongoing work as a ‘Fine Art perfumer’, Borkowsky creates scent portraits by posing the question: ‘Why do you make art?’. He then analyses and interprets the responses in order to create meaningful fragrances that capture the essence of each artist. Just like any other means of portraiture, each fragrance is unique, complex and highly personal, yet allows the audience to interpret them in their own way. By using the craft of perfumery, Perfume as Practice also highlights alternative ways of thinking about portraiture, scent and art in general.

The opening evening features an artist talk from Borkowsky at 7pm, explaining the ideas and processes behind Perfume as Practice. This exhibition will open in the Project Space in conjunction with the East Midlands Graduate Project exhibition in the Main Gallery. As always, there will be a donations bar with ales from local brewery, Springhead.
Free Entry: Everyone Welcome
Workshop:
Saturday 11th November, 2pm – 4pm
Michael Borkowsky will be holding a perfume making workshop that gives participants an opportunity to find out more about the perfume making process and its possibilities, and to create a fragrance of their own.

Borkowsky begins by talking about his unique approach to perfume making, before giving a working demonstration of how to make a 50ml eau de toilette. He also explains about the craft of perfumery, including information on fragrance notes, fragrance families, and how to achieve a successful blend. Participants make their own perfume, choosing from a wide range of oils. The result – their very own perfume in a spray bottle that they can take home on the day!
