Board Member with specialism in HR & Legal

In order for us to continue developing Portland Works into a thriving centre for traditional and contemporary makers we have lots of work to do. We’re into the third year of ownership and we see this as our third phase. Phase one – we purchased the building, phase two – we stopped the raves, kicked out the squatters and prevented the big bits of the building from falling down. Now we’re in phase three – the part where we really start to get our house in order.

We’re looking for someone with a mixed skill set – from putting together policies to keep our people safe and happy, to advising on the best way to manage the complex situations that come hand-in-hand with developing a business.

It’s essential to have an understanding of the issues faced, and how to overcome them, when working with volunteers, tenants, a small but busy staff team and limited resources.

In addition to meeting 10 times per annum, we are looking for a board member with capacity to undertake relevant tasks and to act as an advisor to our manager as and when needed. This could include attending occasional meetings, coming into the works to advise on issues or simply speaking over the phone.

This is a really exciting opportunity for someone with the right skills and attitude – to develop one of Sheffield’s most iconic spaces into a safe and enjoyable space fit for future generations.
