In order for us to continue developing Portland Works into a thriving centre for traditional and contemporary makers we have lots of work to do. Although the building is grade II* listed, it isn’t a museum – and we are therefore looking for a solutions orientated person, someone with a creative vision to help us to maintain the heritage yet enable the building to work better for our future.
We’re inspired by places such as Salts Mill and the new SIA, and we’re keen to recruit someone with the vision and ability to lead the way in terms of creatively transforming the spaces we have to the highest possible finished result.
As the person on our board with a specialism in building design – you must have a clearly demonstrable background in architecture, building or the creation of interesting and usable spaces. It’s essential to have an understanding of the issues faced, and how to overcome them, when dealing with an old listed building – similarly – you must have a realistic outlook in terms of understanding the restrictions of working with a volunteer workforce and limited resources.
In addition to meeting 10 times per annum, we are looking for a board member with capacity to act as an advisor to our manager and building work co-ordinator as and when needed. This could include attending occasional meetings, coming into the works to advise on issues or simply speaking over the phone.
This is a really exciting opportunity for someone with the right skills and attitude – to develop one of Sheffield’s most iconic buildings into an interesting, high quality space fit for future generations.
