Gallery Town, Rotherham requires an experienced gallery curator for ongoing projects at its outdoor gallery located in Rotherham town centre. The gallery is the largest of its kind in the UK and displays artworks publicly on the sides of buildings, walls and alike. Following the success of Meadowhall and Parkgate Retail Park Rotherham town centre’s footfall declined dramatically leaving behind rows of empty shops and a dilapidated town.
Over the last few years the local authority and various projects have sought to find a new direction for Rotherham promoting its High Street as an independent alternative and promoting arts, culture and heritage in the town. Gallery Town was one of these projects and was set up in 2011 to help with turning Rotherham town centre into a more cultural destination. Up until now the artworks displayed have been printed on a large scale meaning they look great but are not original works of art. However, the gallery is now heading in a new artistic direction and is working towards welcoming commissioned artists to the town to create original public works of art to complement the existing gallery.
Gallery Town is therefore looking to work with an experienced gallery curator/s who has worked with well-established galleries, venues and/or projects. Experience working with public art would be a key advantage however it is not necessary if other strengths are shown. Experience working directly with and commissioning artists is also advantageous.
Salary/Rates are negotiable and will reflect the individual’s experience.
