Freelance Digital Artist

Birmingham Museums Trust (BMT) in partnership with Dhaka-based new media project BLKBX (produced by Nafis Ahmed), is seeking to commission an artist living or working in Birmingham to create a new digital artwork. The artist should have some existing experience working with digital media and ideally have Bangladeshi or Pakistani heritage. Early stage career artists are encouraged to apply.

The artwork produced should focus on Birmingham-based experiences of the COVID 19 pandemic and its’ after effects. The creative process should incorporate an exchange with Ahmed, who is creating his own digital artwork focusing on a Dhaka-based view of the pandemic. His artwork will be focused on the theme of dystopia and the social inequalities and injustices laid bare and deepened by the pandemic. There will also be the opportunity to draw inspiration from BMT’s own archive Life in Lockdown that documents the experiences of Birmingham people during the pandemic.

This will form part of the Transforming Narratives project which aims to establish Birmingham as a leading international centre for contemporary Pakistani and Bangladeshi arts, for the mutual benefit of Birmingham and cities in Pakistan and Bangladesh. The project is managed by Culture Central, supported by Arts Council England and delivered in association with The British Council.
