Green Man Festival: Open Call Artist Commission

Call for Light and Digital artists, Green Man Commissions 2019

R&D Residency 16-19th Aug 2018

Deadline Friday 15 April 2018

Visual artists working in a sculptural, environmental and/or site specific way with light and/or digital media are invited to send expressions of interest for temporary outdoor commissions at Green Man in 2019.

Artist fee of up to £1,500 per artist/collective, plus access to a materials budget.

Residency during the this year’s festival with £500 bursary per artist/collective to support attendance, plus travel expenses and subsistence.

Green Man has been taking a new approach to ‘site-art’ at the festival since 2016 to bring international and early-career artists into the festival environment to consider an art experience which goes beyond decorative or functional site-art. Working with artists including sculptors Nathaniel Rackowe, David Ogle, and Megan Broadmeadow, collective Flow Conceptions and glitch/digital media artist Antonio Roberts.

We are interested in commissioning large-scale, visually engaging art-works that will make a marked impact on the festival site and audience by changing the perception of the space or adding a new visual experience. Artists are encouraged to present well-considered proposals for ambitious works with strong content, a solid artistic research base and high production values. We are not looking for decorative proposals. The festival has close links with science, although proposals not related to science will be considered.

All works must function round the clock, especially at night, in all weathers and be fabricated to be safe for audiences and to withstand the test of the elements for up to a week. Green Man is offering guidance from its Visual Arts Producer in developing work for the outdoor, social context of the festival, its audience and technical installation support. Artists need not have prior experience of these factors.

Art works will be installed within the ʻset’ of the festival, which has a distinct brand identity through its stages, facades and signage, and nestles in the remains of an historic 1800’s estate with walled gardens and gate house.

We are looking for artists who are interested in a commission as a developmental activity, supported by our Visual Arts Producer as well as experienced artists. We’d also be interested to hear of existing work available to tour.

If you are interested in submitting a proposal the first stage is an expression of interest in attending an R&D residency taking place this coming summer between 16-19 August at the festival. After this selected artists will be invited to submit full proposals.

During the R&D residency artists will see the site (a temporary city); meet the 2018 exhibiting artists and camp alongside them and the festival crew forming a peer group; and attend a programme of activity including talks by specialists and previous artists and a facilitated tour of the 2018 commissions.

If you instead have touring work to propose to us, please upload your promotional information here as a single PDF, including images, full costs and technical requirements.

For this first stage you will be asked to submit a single PDF containing the following:

  • Up to 10 images of your work, so we can judge the quality of your practice
  • One or two web-links to any moving-image or footage of your work (if relevant)
  • Weblink to your website
  • Artist Statement (400 words max), so we can understand who you are as an artist and the nature of your work and ideas
  • Statement of Interest (500 words max) so we can judge how relevant this would be to you right now and understand your initial ideas for an art work. Refer to current artistic research which underpins your work.
  • Artist CV (no more than 2 pages)

Please add your name to the PDF title and keep it clear and simple so that we can read it easily.
