Head of Programme, Contemporary Art Practice

The Royal College of Art is the only entirely postgraduate university devoted to research and knowledge exchange, and teaching and practice in art, design, communication and humanities. Located in South Kensington and Battersea, its excellence in teaching and research has been consistently recognised as being of the highest standing.

The REF 2014 results cemented the RCA’s position as the UK’s leading university of art and design, and for the last two years, the College has been ranked as the world’s number one art and design University. In March 2016, the UK government announced a commitment to help fund a £100 million development of the College’s Battersea site to create a flagship centre for design and innovation.

Within what will be the largest School at the RCA, Fine Art, a new Contemporary Art Practice Programme will be launching in September 2016. Designed to be flexible and adaptive to new and emerging interests and potential areas of research, the Programme will be delivered through four studio-based pathways (Critical Practice, Moving Image, Performance and Public Sphere) alongside the existing Fine Art programmes in an increasingly integrated and collaborative structure.

The Programme marks an historic moment for the RCA, which sees an extension in the College’s range of specialisms that will enhance its intellectual scope and enable it to embrace and test important contemporary discourses including post-colonialism, exhibition studies and archival studies among many others.

Reporting to the Dean of the School of Fine Art, the new Head of Programme will be responsible for the guiding the academic direction, teaching and learning, research, and management of resources of the Programme and its staff.

Candidates will bring an outstanding track record of achievement and leadership in a relevant field, and the ability to think dynamically and creatively about the future of contemporary art practice, attract and support the highest quality students, and build depth and capacity across the wider School and College, ensuring that the Programme is recognised for its success in research and knowledge exchange, as well as for its role in defining new practices and discourses.
