Lead Curator

The National Trust is investing in curatorship, increasing the number of curators and developing our capability across the organisation. Curators at the Trust are influential and collaborative, using their knowledge and understanding to influence care for our collections and places, develop research and create dynamic presentation, interpretation and programming.

Interviews held: 28th August 2019

Your work location can be: The regional office in Goddard’s, York, Manchester/Altrincham, Newcastle, and The Lakes.

The National Trust Consultancy is home to specialists in every field. The Consultancy will enable our properties to benefit from a range of creative and innovative thinking, as well as expertise relating to caring for the nation’s heritage and landscapes. Inspired by our outstanding portfolio of sites and collections, we are a progressive region that embraces complexity and contrast, working with pride and in partnership to explore their wider significances.

Our curators play a vital part in the Trust’s ambition to ensure that these landscapes, buildings, collections and stories are preserved, inspiringly presented and accessible. The role of regional Lead Curator is as much about influencing change as it is about pursuing a single specialism, although you will also be expected to initiate, guide and support collaborative research, interpretation and conservation strategies.

We’re looking for:

  • Significant curatorial experience and responsibility at a senior level
  • Considerable experience of leading and participating in interdisciplinary teams and partnerships
  • Proven ability to listen constructively and to influence people of differing professional priorities
  • Knowledge and experience of public delivery in at least three of the following areas; history, social history, archaeology, or the histories of architecture, gardens, landscapes or art.
  • A record of sound academic research and its presentation through publication and contributions to conferences etc.
  • A comprehensive understanding of current best practice in both the integrated care and management of landscape, buildings and collections and to public access.

We also offer a generous benefits package including further training and development as well as paid volunteering opportunities.
