Open Call for Textile Creative

An opportunity has arisen for a textile creative who has the experience of delivering an engaging and accessible project, with a mixed age group, to produce an impressive banner for the Model Village whilst exploring the areas strong Trade Union heritage. During the significant Heritage Lottery Fund, Bolsover District and Derbyshire County Council renovation project that is currently taking place, the project seeks to create a new banner that can be proudly displayed at local events. The banner, it is hoped, will contribute to changing the views of others about the Model Village and in turn, people will learn more about the historical significance of the area with a fresh response to the stories from this community.

We are looking for an exceptional creative who has the experience of delivering innovative activities with local community members, as well as producing an artwork that can articulate the story of the model village with the residents and visitors alike.

The emphasis on this activity will be on informality and the social aspect. It will bring people together to talk and explore the areas strong Trade Union heritage and how it connects to the Model Village and to the history of Bolsover. A particular focus will be to look at Trade Union Banners and their role in reflecting that shared history. Please note, The National Union of Mineworkers – Bolsover Branch banner currently hangs over the main door of the Bolsover Parish Church.

Alongside the creative activities project participants will have the opportunity to visit Mansfield Museum to see a collection of banners first hand and find out more from the curator about why and how they were made. Participants from The Model will work with the commissioned textile creative, who will teach new skills and support them to design and make a banner that represents and celebrates the heritage of the Model Village. The banner will be a community resource for the future that will be displayed at local events to raise awareness of the project and to celebrate the area.

Junction Arts are keen to work with creatives who can facilitate a more open form of access for the public to engage with their work, that the process of its creation enables active engagement and direct involvement.

Budget:
 The all inclusive fee is £1,500 including travel and VAT. There is a separate budget of £500 for materials and production of the banner.

Application:
The creative should submit a written proposal of no more than 2 sides of A4 stating how they would deliver the project, to Cora Glasser, Project Coordinator, cora@junctionarts.org
Please include: • An outline of relevant experience
• An outline of how you would allocate your time during this commission
• In addition to the written proposal please include up to 5 images to evidence your previous work
• CV including your contact details and names of 2 referees
• Confirmation of Public Liability Insurance to a minimum value of £5m
• Confirmation of availability for the 22nd March 2017, if called for interview CV and website links submitted without a written application will not be considered.

Please make sure your application is submitted via email as one combined PDF and no more than 5MB in size. Please also note that artists ideally should have a current enhanced DBS, Driving Licence and Public Liability Insurance due to the nature and location of the project.

Deadline for applications: 12th March 2017
Interviews will be held on the 22nd March 2017 and will take place at the Community Hub at 133 New Bolsover.
The successful artist will be informed of our decision by the 24th March.
