Programme Manager

Firstsite is a contemporary visual arts organisation based in a stunning, award winning Gallery in Colchester, Essex. Since opening in 2011, Firstsite has welcomed nearly a million visitors, achieving record attendance of 156,000 in 2017/18. Firstsite has established its reputation for being an art Gallery of regional and national importance especially through its work bringing internationally significant artworks to very diverse audiences.

The Programme Manager – Exhibitions and Events is responsible for the delivery of Firstsite’s artistic programme of exhibitions, projects and events. Supporting the Head of Programme in conceiving, planning, managing and delivering the programme, the role contributes to achieving targets for financial sustainability and increases in audience attendance diversity and quality of experience.

This role offers an exciting opportunity to work and make exhibitions with a broad spectrum of artists, from those at the beginning of their careers to those that are internationally recognised; recent projects have included exhibitions and commissions by Grayson Perry, Gillian Wearing and RAQS Media Collective. An integral part of the role will involve directly co-authoring and delivering new exhibition ideas with a diverse range of communities that Firstsite has now established close relationships with, such as Refugee Action–Colchester, African Families in the UK, Colchester Nepalese Society and Colchester Garrison with whom Firstsite has built a collaborative relationship over the past two years.

To succeed in this role, you will have excellent project management skills and proven ability to work under pressure to meet agreed standards, deadlines and budgets – whilst also managing many complex relationships with individuals and organisations. You will be an excellent communicator with strong influencing skills, both written and oral. Able to produce clear and compelling written materials and presentations for a variety of stakeholders including funders, diverse audiences and community participants. You will have a strong track record of leading and motivating others, liaising effectively and collaboratively with colleagues and external contacts within a museum/gallery environment.
