Sculpture Production Award

Pangaea Sculptors’ Centre (PSC) is delighted to announce the launch of the inaugural Sculpture Production Award 2019. Open to emerging artists working in 3D, based within the UK but outside of London, the Award will provide six sculptors with skills mentoring and a £1,000 production grant towards the realisation of a new work. One of the six artists will also be invited to exhibit at the Coventry Biennial 2019.

Submissions deadline: 10 May 2019 (17:00 BST)

Award winners announced: 5 June 2019

About the award

The Sculpture Production Award is aimed at emerging artists looking to explore the process of working with external fabricators. It is a unique opportunity for artists to realise a piece of sculpture from concept through to completion with support into this new way of working.

PSC will support the six artists to find the fabricator or technical specialist they need to create a new three-dimensional artwork. They will be awarded £1,000 towards the production costs of the piece. Additionally, they will receive mentoring throughout this new way of working.

Fabrication support possibilities range from traditional mould making and modelling to metal work or digital design. It can be on the spectrum of ‘straight fabrication’ to the artist working directly with a technician to learn new skills themselves.

Selection Panel

The panel of specialists encourage applications which demonstrate an individual’s ambition to develop their practice. The six winning artists will be announced 5 June 2019.

Ruth Claxton – Associate Director, Eastside Projects; Creative Director, STEAMhouse

Flora Fairbairn – Independent Curator, Art Advisor and Director of Branch Arts

Ryan Gander – Artist

Helen Pheby – Head of Curatorial Programme, Yorkshire Sculpture Park

Lucy Tomlins – Director, Pangaea Sculptors’ Centre

Proposals

Proposals must include plans for the piece to be shown in the public domain. This could be as a public art commission or as part of a solo or group show.

The artwork produced should be exhibited in the UK before March 2020.

The panel encourage ambitious, well-presented and planned applications from those working in all materials. We will be looking for projects that will benefit from the mentoring support offered and which allow room for development in the artist’s own practice.

The fabrication and technical support can be used as required, from the creation of an internal armature or display mechanism to the central component of the piece. PSC will consider your needs and match to our team’s skills and ability to support you.

Who can apply?

The Sculpture Production Award is open to artists living and working within the UK but outside of London.

We welcome applications from those without formal education or qualifications and we anticipate the support will appeal to artists within the first seven years of their professional practice.

There is no age limit to apply.

Applicants must:

  • be living in the UK but not London
  • not be in full or part-time education at any point between May 2019 and March 2020
  • have a confirmed or realistic opportunity to show the work they will produce in the UK before March 2020
  • have the legal right to work in the UK at the point of application, through to the close of the exhibition in which the work produced is shown.

How much does i cost to apply?

It is free to apply for this Award.

This has been made possible thanks to the generous support of Arts Council England, CVAN EM, CVAN South East, Eastside Projects, New Art West Midlands, STEAMhouse and the Yorkshire & Humber Visual Arts Network.

This support recognises a shared commitment to keeping opportunities such as this free to artists, especially in light of the unpaid labour that already goes in to making such an application.
