#JustSewStoriesAbout
A textile community project by The Eloquent Fold, artists Carole Miles and Phiona Richards.
This exhibition contains works made by a group of creative Corby women during a series of free, regular making sessions at Swan Gardens.
During this project, the group created a series of textile pieces inspired by the huipil, a traditional Guatemalan tunic often worn by artist Frida Kahlo. These simple garments became the support structure for their Just Sew Stories.
Each piece is as individual as its maker. The designs are abstract or figurative, bold or subtle, plain or fancy and incorporate saved fabrics, garments, batik, embroidery, metal washers, copper pipe, photographs, buttons, cross stitch, words, and other embellishments.
Fabrics cover us, surround us, delight and inspire us; they have the power to summon up memories of special times or places. This project has been an excellent way of bringing people together to share stories and learn new skills.
The Just Sew Stories project has been made possible by funding from Northamptonshire Community Foundation through the Constance Travis Endowment Fund.
Many thanks to Swan Gardens for allowing the group to use their space as a workspace for the project.
