About

Now We Rise and We Are Everywhere is a guest exhibition and series of performances by Danielle Lemaire, inspired by the work and times of Nick Drake. The exhibition will include new drawings, the launch of a riso-stencilled art book and 10″ vinyl record, film, documents, prints and performance related to the work and times of Nick Drake (born Burma 1948, died England 1974).

Following his self-chosen death at the age of 26 in 1974, Nick Drake became a cult figure, inspiring a community of “Drakeheads”. In this exhibition, Danielle explores what makes his work so admired today through a variety of media. The quality of Nick Drake’s music and the psychedelic 60s and 70s in which it was made were at odds with the conservative English Midlands of the time. In Drake’s work there is a tension between the reality of everyday life and the potential of something big and unknowable. Lemaire extends those tensions to Brexit-era Britain with drawings of the domestic but uncanny, sited within the rural Fineshade Wood.
