At Surface this spring, artists are invited to explore contemporary abstract art.
The definition of abstract means to separate or withdraw something from something else, the distancing of an idea from objective referents. Abstract art is not about representing an accurate depiction of a visual reality; instead, it achieves its effects through shapes, colours, forms and mark-making. Abstract art is often seen as carrying a spiritual aspect, in that it can be seen to stand for order, purity, and simplicity.
Abstract art formed a central area of art in the 20th century, and now exists in many forms. It can be two or three dimensional, large or small, use moving image, and many materials and surfaces. We are keen to see how artists are utilising abstract art today.
Abstract will explore the broad diversity of abstract art in contemporary practice. All artwork that is abstract or explores abstraction will be considered; entries that explore wider themes, genres, processes and methods are welcome. Artworks that examine different methods of presentation are encouraged. We are looking for innovative and critically informed work, as well as technical skill. The show will be held across both Surface’s exhibition spaces.

One exhibitor will be awarded a solo show in Surface’s main exhibition space. This will be an opportunity for the selected artist to showcase new work in a contemporary art gallery. The winner of the prize will be chosen by a selection panel.
