Surface is delighted to announce the exhibition for our twelfth East Midlands Graduate Project, EM22: Communion.

Communion is a testament to the creativity of the artists. The work on display resonates with the eclectic nature of the artists involved: sculpture, installation, drawing and painting, along with sound art and digital printing. From the provocative, durable language used in the crochet garments of Shannon Charlesworth, to the ambiguous, raw paintings of Charlotte Bainbridge, and the everyday items that peculiarly inhabit Jonny Bennet’s physical soundscapes, Communion promises something for everyone. Experience what some of the region’s brightest new artists have to offer.

The East Midlands Graduate Project supports Fine Art graduates across the region as they make the transition from university to the professional art world. Communion is the culmination of a four-week residency undertaken in Surface Gallery’s top-floor Project Space. Eight of the region’s most exciting new graduate artists have been commissioned to produce original work for the exhibition. Each of the artists have built on their successes at university and developed their practice and creativity to produce pieces to attract and engage the viewer.

While each artist retains a crucial particularity of their practice, the works within the exhibition are interconnected through a variety of ties that include exploratory visions, committed research, and refinement of skill. These aspects that their varying Fine Art courses have fabricated, and that have been strengthened within the residency, will fuel their emergence into the expanding contemporary fine art communities further afield.

Communion opens in the Main Gallery, as an immersive theatre group Chronic Insanity moves into the Project Space to prepare for performances during the second week of the exhibition. As always there will be a donations bar with ales from local brewery, Pheasantry.
